Korkyra Melania, named by Greek colonist in 5th century BC, is forested island in South part of the Adriatic Sea. Traces of the Greek colonization were preserved on the Lumbarda Psephisma, stone monument with the oldest inscription in this part of Europe that details an agreement about division of the land for growing grape vine, a culture that continues on this island for more than 25 centuries. In this historical document the island of Korčula was defined in terms of tradition and philosophy by wine. In the Mediterranean village Čara, placed in the middle of the island with stone houses scattered on the hill slopes, grape vine is still nourished as the most precious thing and visible proof of long history. Known for Illyrian stone heaps and traces from Greek and Roman civilizations, Čara is among the four oldest settlements on the island. We do not know precisely when Čara was founded, and it was mentioned for the first time as a parish in a archival manuscript from 1329. Story of Čara is the long history of man and island and wine. Wine in your glass in front of you retells a stories and legends of Čara – wine epitomes life as it is supposed to be. Story about apparition of the Our Lady of Čarsko polje, the most popular destination for Marian pilgrimage in the Dubrovnik County, and the story is confirmed on a painted relief of alabaster with scenes from the life of Jesus placed in the small chapel in the middle of Čarsko polje filed; the relief was found in 1686 in Čavić cove, the site of the apparition of Our Lady. Story about the oldest cypress tree in Dalmatia, protected natural monument – an ancient tree and a symbol of valor, determination and rebirth in many civilizations. Wine brings you back in 11th century and narrates you a legend about nine brothers and one sister, Crnomira, how they stood up against the Doge of Venice to protect their folk. Three of nine brothers were executed, the rest of them were condemned to row on the Venice galiots, but the story about them is remembered and it defines Čara throughout centuries. Wine connects you with doubting Thomas, portrayed on the altar picture by Leonardo Bassano, Renaissance artist and master of the chiaroscuro; the picture is now in the parish church of St Peter, and the archive holds written record it was bought by poor villagers from Čara. Wine reveals your hidden lives in stone villas from 15th, 16th and 17th century, but first of all it will tell you about Pošip, white wine made from the autochthonous grape grown on the island of Korčula. Pošip was cultivated by natural crossover out of two also autochthonous grape vines – Zlatarica and Bratkovina, former gave Pošip sweetness level and the latter acidity. Genetic origin of Pošip was proofed on the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb by the molecular markers technique. Pošip is a rare autochthonous sort in the world with established place and time of its beginning. It was the first wine protected by law in Croatia, and this year (1967 – 2017) we celebrate 50th anniversary of the officially protected wine made from the harvest 1965. This wine connects you with the Mediterranean space, everlasting fountain of eternal values, and with a peasant from Čara who recognized those values in Pošip. It invites you to visit the island of Korčula, mysterious island in the endless blue sea, anchored in the clear waters, wrapped in the scent of Mediterranean herbs, lubricated with olive oil and sweetened with figs and locust been – an island destined to live with wine.
